Recovery Fund for Mozambique’s Coastal Communities
Mozambique’s coastal farming communities are rebuilding after catastrophic floods. The Recovery Fund restores land, protects livestock, and strengthens food security. Your support helps families recover and build long-term climate resilience.
Farmers
Recovery Fund for the Farmers Who Feed Mozambique
Family farmers produce around 95% of Mozambique’s food, yet receive no subsidies, no insurance, and no disaster support.
After catastrophic floods, they are left to rebuild alone. The Recovery Fund helps restore land, dairy production, and food security.

Why This Matters
Family farmers are the backbone of Mozambique’s food system. They produce most of the country’s food and cultivate nearly all the farmland, yet they are the least protected when disaster strikes.
- Family farmers produce ~95% of national agricultural output
- They cultivate the vast majority of cropped land
- Agriculture is the main livelihood for most rural households
- They supply nearly all the fresh foods eaten daily in Mozambican homes
When floods destroy their land, crops, and livestock, there are no subsidies, no insurance, and no disaster support. Without help, families are forced to start again from zero.
Our Work in Macaneta, Marracuene
For the past four years, we have been developing a 600‑hectare climate‑resilient dairy and agroforestry system in Macaneta, on Mozambique’s coast. This work supports local families and demonstrates how rural communities can adapt to a changing climate.
- Fresh milk and dairy production for local and national markets
- Corn and rice cultivation for food and silage
- Circular‑economy practices: manure as fertilizer, whey as nutrition, tilapia integrated into the system
- Agroforestry and soil regeneration to protect land and biodiversity
- Training for young veterinarians and collaboration with national research institutes
This system survived the devastating 2023 floods, which destroyed plantations, pastures, fodder, fruit trees, and access roads. We rebuilt once. Now, with the 2026 floods, the region is under threat again.
The Crisis We Face Today
Mozambique is once again facing catastrophic floods. Entire communities are affected, and rural livelihoods are at risk.
- Farmland and grazing areas submerged
- Access roads cut off
- Livestock stressed and at risk
- Food supply chains disrupted
The same family‑farming sector that feeds the country is again devastated. Without support, families risk losing their income, their livestock, and their ability to rebuild.
What the Recovery Fund Supports
The Recovery Fund is designed to help coastal farming families bounce back after floods and build long‑term resilience.
- Verification of the 600‑hectare climate‑resilience project
Unlocking long‑term income for families through climate‑resilient agriculture. - Restoration of grazing and agroforestry systems
Rebuilding pastures, fodder, and soil health after flood damage. - Recovery of dairy production
Protecting livestock, stabilising milk supply, and restoring local food systems. - Community training and climate‑adaptation support
Helping families adopt practices that reduce losses and increase resilience. - Circular‑economy and food‑processing improvements
Reducing post‑harvest losses and strengthening local value chains.
This is not emergency aid or a short‑term fix. The Recovery Fund is a long‑term system that helps families rebuild, adapt, and thrive after every climate disaster.
